Message from Local Authority Regarding
Temporary Arrangements for Pupils Living in the Ruddington Area
(August 2024)
Due to exceptional and unique circumstances and following discussions with County Councillors Reg Adair and Matt Barney, the Transport and Education Local Authority are making an out of policy decision to award free travel to those Ruddington families who have made travel applications to The South Wolds Academy for the next academic year (2024/2025). This is irrespective of whether the family preferenced Rushcliffe Spencer Academy or South Wolds Academy as their first preference at 24/25 Primary to Secondary Admissions. The LA (Transport and Education) have also jointly agreed to continue this arrangement for those pupils commencing their secondary education in 2025/2026 due to families making their choice on schools in Autumn 2024.
It is anticipated that Rushcliffe Spencer’s site expansion will be completed in 2025/26 and therefore, for the Academic Year 2026/2027 and beyond, travel applications will be assessed against the provisions made in the Home to School Transport Policy. From this point, pupils will only be awarded travel assistance if they are attending the nearest available or nearest available catchment school to their home address. At Primary to Secondary Transfer (PST) this will be based on whether a family could have secured a place at their nearest school even if they did not preference this school. For your information, the Home to School Transport states that where two or more schools have a coterminous or overlapping catchment area, the nearest of the schools to a family’s home address will be regarded as the designated catchment school for transport eligibility purposes. In respect to Ruddington families, pupils will only be awarded free travel to South Wolds Academy if this is the nearest catchment school OR they would not have secured a place at Rushcliffe Spencer Academy.
Those receiving the free entitlement will continue to receive it until the end of year 11 (unless their circumstances change, i.e. change of home address or school). Parents of Year 7 pupils (September 2024) that have applied for travel assistance will be issued a free travel pass. Any further applications received will be processed taking into account the decision that has been made.
We have highlighted some key points regarding what to do for certain situations, but further information can be found in the Nottinghamshire County Council “School Transport Travel Pass Guide” leaflet using the link above.
Change of Circumstances
If you have a change to your circumstances, such as moving address or school, you will need to re-apply online using the above link to be re-assessed. You will also need to return your current pass to Nottinghamshire County Council.
A temporary pass may be issued by The South Wolds Academy & Sixth Form in the interim whilst you await your new pass from Nottinghamshire County Council. Please contact the office at office@southwolds.uk should this be required.
Bad Weather
In the event of adverse weather conditions, The South Wolds Academy & Sixth Form will liaise with bus companies to arrange an earlier collection to ensure students can travel home safely. The South Wolds Academy & Sixth Form will inform students and contact parents to confirm if the school is to close and what the arrangements will be.
Lost Property
Should any property be left on a bus, you will need to contact the bus company for the bus your child travels on. The bus contact details can be found below for each bus route.
Behaviour
At The South Wolds Academy & Sixth Form, we are committed to doing all that we can to ensure that every student is safe on the bus and that behaviour is good. If behaviour is below our expectations, then we do impose sanctions in line with our Behaviour Management and Rewards Policy. In rare instances, we will work with Nottingham County Council and the bus provider to ban students from the bus where behaviour is below our expectations. Any concerns about behaviour on the bus should be reported to the South Wolds Academy & Sixth Form on 0115 937 3506.
